From July 3rd to 24th, the Atelier Musicale at Casa degli Artisti hosts the third residency of 40Hz Phase 2, with Lorenzo Saini, aka Lo.Sai.

Musician, producer, sound artist and composer, Saini’s path weaves together piano, philosophy and double bass, including a period teaching electronic music production in Berlin (EM-School and Catalyst) and a specialization in composition for image at the Civica Scuola di Musica Claudio Abbado in Milan. His practice moves across a border territory between film scoring, sound art, performance and club music, rooted in twentieth-century experimental music and shaped by a hands-on, almost artisanal approach to timbre and sound production.

Low frequencies run through his entire musical history: from the electric bass played in his years with Tuscan punk, psych and indie bands, to classical double bass studies at the ISSM P. Mascagni in Livorno, to the bass music of his recording project. His debut EP, MAITAKE, released on Danza Tribale, Adiel’s label, was selected by Djrum for his DJ-Kicks on 7K! Records, with a second EP expected by the end of the year. He also works as a sound designer with Timeo Edizioni and collaborates with the ensemble Esecutori di Metallo su Carta.

During the residency, Saini will develop an original composition of approximately 25-30 minutes, integrating sub-frequencies in the 40 Hz range into his own musical language through the 40Hz Rack and the project’s shared protocol, in constant dialogue with the artistic direction and the scientific team.

The residency will culminate in a public Open Studio, where the composition will be presented live. As with every residency, EEG recordings will be carried out on a selected sample, and the audience will take an active part in the research through scientific questionnaires before and after the listening session. Starting from this phase, the protocol also integrates sEMG recordings (surface electromyography), carried out in collaboration with Politecnico di Torino and technical partner LWT3, measuring muscle activity in real time as a direct physiological indicator of the listening state.

Our thanks go to the project’s scientific and curatorial teams and to all the partners who make this journey possible: Università di Pavia, Politecnico di Torino, LWT3, Municipio 1 Milano, Music Innovation Hub, LifeGate, That’s Contemporary, Egidio Galvan, Urbantale.
