Les Biologistes Marins is a duo formed by flutist and performer Beatrice Miniaci and drummer, producer Anton Sconosciuto. Their practice moves across ambient music, sound art and hydro-acoustic research, investigating the relationship between human perception and water understood both as a subject and as a sonic medium.

Artistic Research within the 40Hz Project

During their residency at Casa degli Artisti as part of the 40Hz research platform, Les Biologistes Marins developed a compositional investigation focused on the use of sub-frequencies and low-frequency registers, with particular attention to the 40Hz range, as tools for sound composition and perceptual modulation.

Water played a central role in the research, functioning simultaneously as:
• a recording filter, through underwater microphones and hydrophones
• a vibrational medium, capable of generating and amplifying subsonic and low-frequency waves
• a conceptual and physical element shaping the immersive quality of listening

Through sessions of improvisation, field recording and acoustic manipulation, the duo created fluid, meditative and immersive soundscapes, where each sound is continuously reshaped through its interaction with water, environment and body. The research emphasized how low-frequency vibrations can be felt as much as heard, reinforcing the tactile dimension of sound perception.

Open Studio and Public Research Sessions

On July 15, 2025, the Musical Atelier of Casa degli Artisti hosted the Open Studio dedicated to Les Biologistes Marins, structured as two listening sessions open to the public. These sessions were conceived as research environments, combining live performance with scientific observation.

During the Open Studio, EEG recordings were conducted on a selected group of participants, while the broader audience contributed to the research through structured questionnaires administered before and after listening. Different versions of the same composition, ranging from pure frequency-based material to more complex creative stratifications, were presented in order to observe variations in perceptual and cognitive responses.

The Open Studio contributed to the broader 40Hz research trajectory, representing a concrete step toward the development of one of the first compositional protocols in Italy dedicated to the study of music not only as sound, but as a creative process with potential relevance in therapeutic contexts.

Contribution to the 40Hz Research Framework

Les Biologistes Marins’ residency introduced a distinctive material and ecological perspective into the 40Hz project, expanding the research beyond purely electronic or abstract sonic environments. By grounding sub-frequency exploration in hydro-acoustic practices, their work reinforced the project’s investigation into care, immersion and sensory awareness, and contributed to the artistic-scientific validation process that defines 40Hz.
