A deductive corollary to the Coherent System Theory
Premise
The coherent system theory describes reality as originally organized in a non-local, highly coherent regime, later articulated into local systems through processes of decoherence and entropy. This articulation does not appear as a secondary accident, but as a structural response to a fundamental problem: the intrinsic vulnerability of global coherence.
A fully coherent system, if entirely accessible, is fragile. Any sufficiently extended perturbation tends to propagate throughout the entire system. Quantum physics shows that coherence degrades in the presence of an environment, while decoherence produces stable and robust local states. At the same time, entanglement indicates that non-locality is a real property of nature, while locality emerges as a secondary operational regime.
From this follows a first deduction: locality does not arise for phenomenological convenience, it arises as an informational protection strategy.
A further architectural clue strengthens this view. All observable complex systems, from biology to social organizations, exhibit a primary orientation toward survival. Life privileges stability before expansion, resilience before optimization, continuity before performance. This universal pattern suggests that survival represents an original structural constraint of the system, rather than a late emergent property.
Here, survival should not be understood as intention, but as persistence of informational structures within noise, that is, stability of identity through change.
This leads to the central question:
how can a global coherent system protect itself from its own vulnerability while continuing to evolve?
The proposed answer introduces an intermediate functional layer: consciousness.
The problem of coherence vulnerability
Violations of Bell inequalities show that physical reality does not obey classical locality. Decoherence describes the mechanism through which quantum interference is suppressed, allowing stable local states to emerge. Quantum Darwinism shows how the environment redundantly records certain information, producing objective consensus among observers.
Together, these elements outline a precise structure: non-locality forms the deep fabric, decoherence generates local stability, environmental redundancy produces shared reality.
To maintain continuity, the coherent system therefore relinquishes direct exposure.
By delegating experience to local subsystems, it prevents any perturbation from becoming global.
Consciousness as process, not storage
If the coherent system delegates experience to local systems, a crucial problem remains: how to integrate locally produced information without reconstructing a new vulnerable coherent pole?
The proposed solution is that consciousness does not function as an archive, but as a flow.
Consciousness does not store global information, does not maintain stable correlations, does not accumulate coherent structure. Instead, it operates as a dynamic field of fragmented informational collection.
Field here means a distribution of capacities for access, gathering, compression, and transfer of local information, without maintaining shared phase across regions.
In this sense, consciousness is the totality of local information in motion.
It does not represent the world, it traverses it.
This framework resonates with David Bohm’s implicate order and John Archibald Wheeler’s participatory universe, while introducing an additional element: a genuine architecture of informational survival.
Consciousness is not a central subject, but a distributed access layer.
“Collective,” in this context, means a distributed property of the informational layer, not a personified unified mind.
Time, entropy, and the temporal firewall
The most effective protection of the coherent system operates not only in space, but in time.
By distributing information along an irreversible dimension, the system obtains:
a past that no longer physically exists,
a future that is not yet determined,
a microscopic and unstable present.
No global information is ever available at the same instant.
This creates a genuine temporal firewall.
Consciousness traverses a sequence of local frames. Continuity emerges from refresh rate, not from simultaneous totality.
This serialization describes a functional property, sequential access to local registers, compatible both with continuous time and with hypotheses of temporal granularity. The model uses serialization as an access constraint, not as an assumption about the ultimate structure of time.
Consciousness does not live inside the frame.
It lives in the transition between frames.
It is the mechanism through which the world becomes traversable without ever becoming fully visible.
Decoherent non-locality
To remain aligned with the original coherent domain, consciousness requires non-local access. Yet this access cannot be coherent, otherwise it would reconstruct global vulnerability.
This introduces a new class:
decoherent non-locality.
Distributed access to information without stable or reconstructible correlations. Permeability without aggregation. Presence everywhere without totalization.
This allows consciousness to be non-local while remaining informationally sparse.
Presentiment and bifurcations
Physiological anticipation experiments associated with Dean Radin show weak but statistically significant bodily variations occurring milliseconds before randomly selected emotional stimuli.
The effect appears as a statistical deviation across many trials, with small amplitude and strong dependence on protocols. This assigns the phenomenon the status of a model-compatible clue, not a definitive proof.
The key point is that anticipation concerns classes of emotionally salient events, not specific contents.
In the proposed model, this does not indicate access to the future.
It indicates access to bifurcations.
The non-local domain contains the topology of possible frames. Collective consciousness can access this structure of possibilities, not outcomes.
Physiological response reflects proximity to a significant transition, not the final event.
This simultaneously preserves local freedom, genuine evolution, and coherent system security.
Local freedom here means openness of trajectories within constraints, structural indeterminacy sufficient to generate evolutionary variation.
The coherent system and the space of possibilities
A decisive point emerges.
Consciousness does not intervene in events. It renders the geometry of bifurcations readable to the coherent system.
The coherent system does not modify what happens in local time. It modifies the structure of the domain of possibilities from which local time draws.
It does not govern events. It governs the manifold of trajectories.
This means that in the presence of high evolutionary risk dynamics, the coherent system can restructure informational boundary conditions:
alter micro-constraints,
modify statistical distributions,
reopen degrees of freedom,
reduce convergence toward decisional bottlenecks.
This restructuring concerns constraints and metrics of possibility, accessible at the non-local level, while local dynamics remain causal and autonomous.
Local choices remain free. Events remain unpredictable. Evolution remains real.
Consciousness provides feedback. The coherent system updates the structure of possibility.
The correct metaphor is not a force shifting events, but a rulebook rewritten before the game begins, leaving matches to unfold freely.
Local choice and evolution
Each local system introduces variation through real choices. Consciousness records these variations in fragmented form. The coherent system reintegrates the information in compressed fashion, updating its global structure without direct exposure.
The cycle is:
coherence of possibilities,
local fragmentation,
choice,
decoherent collection,
structural reintegration.
Consciousness constitutes the feedback loop of this process.
Status of the clues
Strong physical clues:
entanglement, Bell violations, decoherence, emergence of classicality via environmental redundancy.
Architectural clues:
survival as universal constraint, fragmentation, temporal firewall.
Exploratory clues:
presentiment and non-ordinary phenomenology, treated as model compatibility, not demonstration.
Internal falsifiability
The model would lose coherence if:
anticipation became deterministic and engineerable,
consciousness showed stable content-level predictive capacity,
decoherence failed to account for emergence of classical reality.
These criteria provide clear points of tension.
Conclusion
Consciousness is not an observer of the world.
It is the protocol through which the coherent system explores possibility without losing security.
It is non-local yet decoherent.
Distributed in time.
Immersed in entropy.
Incapable of totality.
It enables evolution by allowing real local choices, while preserving global continuity.
In summary:
consciousness is the evolutionary interface between global coherence and local fragmentation.
Not a side effect of the universe.
Its survival mechanism.
