BAAB is a collaborative duo founded in 2020 by Filippo Cornaglia (prepared drums) and Andrea De Carlo (synthesizers), working within the field of electroacoustic music. Their practice is grounded in an interdisciplinary approach and in a conception of sound understood not only as a physical phenomenon, but as a carrier of meaning, space and memory.

Their research moves across composition, architecture, contemporary performance and sound installation, often exploring the relationship between structure and resonance, repetition and imperfection, and the perceptual impact of sound in physical environments.

Their debut track Palazzo del Lavoro, released on June 30, 2023 by Stellare, is dedicated to the homonymous building designed by Pier Luigi Nervi in 1961 in Turin. The piece reflects BAAB’s ongoing interest in architecture as an acoustic and symbolic space, translating structural principles into sonic form.

Their first full-length album, Musica Solidificata, premiered at Paratissima (Turin) and released on November 3, 2023 by Stellare, further expands this dialogue between sound and architecture. The album is accompanied by a fanzine focused on the relationship between music and built space, developed in collaboration with the architecture collective Innesto, photographer Ivana Noto, and featuring a preface by Taketo Gohara.

In May 2024, BAAB released the EP re:cycle // re:place on audiocassette, featuring excerpts from the music composed for the contemporary dance performance of the same name, created in collaboration with Balletto Teatro di Torino. The work explores themes of transformation, reuse and spatial reconfiguration through sound.

BAAB within the 40Hz Research Project

Within the 40Hz Music & Neuroscience Research project, BAAB took part in the artistic research phase focusing on the integration of sub-frequencies, sustained drones and structured rhythmic patterns into electroacoustic composition. Their contribution explored how low-frequency elements, including 40Hz components, interact with physical space, tactile perception and listening attention.

During their Open Studio at Casa degli Artisti, BAAB presented a live research session in which electroacoustic textures, prepared percussion and synthesized sound were articulated over extended temporal structures. The session functioned both as a public performance and as an experimental setting, contributing to the broader investigation on how compositional choices, sound density and exposure time influence perceptual and cognitive states.

Their approach, rooted in precision and material awareness, added a structurally rigorous dimension to the 40Hz research, reinforcing the dialogue between artistic composition and scientific observation that defines the project.

Filippo Cornaglia

Drummer, percussionist and composer, graduated in Percussion at the Conservatory of Turin. He collaborates with numerous Italian studios and producers and works regularly in studio and live settings with Niccolò Fabi, Andrea Laszlo De Simone and Bianco. Under his own name, he released the concept EPs Balene and Aeroplani, focused on music for images. He also works as a composer with Lab10 Studio and Pepe Fotografia.

Andrea De Carlo

Producer, musician and sound artist, graduated in Audio Production at SAE Institute Milan. He collaborates with various entities in the Italian independent music scene. Using both electronic and acoustic instruments, his research develops systems shaped by the relationship between repetition and imperfection, with particular attention to space and tactile perception of sound. He is the founder of Lab10, a recording studio and creative laboratory based in Turin.
