How 40Hz combines ecological listening, neuroscience and controlled data collection

Scientific Methodology and Research Framework

The 40Hz project was conceived as a research initiative operating at the intersection of music, neuroscience and psychophysiology. Its scientific framework was designed to investigate the impact of sub-frequencies, with particular focus on the 40Hz range, on perceptual, emotional and cognitive states during musical listening.

Unlike laboratory-based studies, the project adopted an ecological research approach, conducting measurements during live concerts and public listening sessions. This choice allowed the research to preserve the integrity of the musical experience while maintaining rigorous control over acoustic and methodological variables.


Ecological research with controlled conditions

All measurements were carried out within the Atelier Musicale of Casa degli Artisti, which functioned as a controlled listening environment positioned between a concert venue and an experimental space. A permanent quadriphonic sound system was installed, including four full-range loudspeakers and a dedicated high-quality subwoofer optimized for low and sub-frequency reproduction.

The acoustic configuration remained constant throughout the research period, ensuring uniform sound exposure across different performances and participants. Each residency included dedicated audio calibration, allowing precise control over frequency reproduction, amplitude and spatial distribution. Research design and artistic framework

The scientific protocol was integrated directly into the artistic process. Each resident artist developed an original composition lasting approximately thirty minutes, following a shared macro-structure designed to sustain attention, modulate perceptual intensity and create optimal moments for sub-frequency integration.

Within this shared framework, artists explored diverse compositional strategies, including sinusoidal tones, drones, isochronic patterns, amplitude modulation and rhythmic structures linked to gamma oscillations. Psychological assessment tools

Behavioral and perceptual data were collected through a standardized battery of psychological questionnaires administered before and after each performance. These included the PANAS (Positive and Negative Affect Schedule) and additional Likert-scale items addressing muscular tension, breathing quality, intrusive thoughts, attentional state and overall emotional condition.

Responses were analyzed by comparing pre- and post-performance scores, allowing the research team to identify variations associated with the listening experience. Neurophysiological data collection

A subset of participants took part in EEG recordings using Emotiv Epoc X devices equipped with 14 electrodes. EEG measurements focused on the gamma frequency band between 30 and 50 Hz, with particular attention to activity around the 40Hz range.

Participants listened to controlled excerpts derived from the compositions developed during the residencies. This setup allowed the correlation of neurophysiological data with both subjective reports and specific compositional features. Data consistency and sample size

During Phase 1, approximately 250 paired pre- and post-performance questionnaires were collected across five completed residencies: Novecento, Les Biologistes Marins, IDRA, Key Clef and Pareal. This sample size is significant for an ecological study conducted in live performance settings and provides a robust basis for preliminary statistical analysis.

Preliminary validation of the scientific framework

The combined use of psychological questionnaires, multichannel EEG recordings and a controlled acoustic environment allowed the project to validate its scientific framework. The methodology demonstrated reliability, replicability and coherence across diverse artistic outputs and audience groups.

While Phase 1 was not designed to establish definitive causal relationships between specific frequencies and observed effects, it successfully confirmed the feasibility of conducting rigorous neuroscientific research within a live musical context. Toward Phase 2: comparative and causal analysis

Building on the validated framework of Phase 1, the next phase of the project will introduce comparative conditions, placebo controls and precise acoustic measurements. The research will further investigate dose-response relationships, exposure duration and differences between sinusoidal tones, drones, isochronic patterns and other frequency-based stimuli.

This progression positions 40Hz as a research platform capable of producing transferable knowledge, contributing to both artistic practice and neuroscientific understanding of sound, listening and wellbeing.
